A new study published in Pediatrics surveyed the pizza intake of American kids over the years 2003-2010. Some of the findings are not surprising:

1. Pizza is not a nutritious food – despite the fact that lobbyists convinced Congress that tomato sauce can count as a serving of vegetables, pizza is very high in unhealthy fats and sodium.

2. Kids consume as much pizza today as 10 years ago, but on the bright side, overall calories from pizza have gone down by 25% in the last decade. This is due in part to improved nutrition standards of school lunches, where pizza is a favorite.

3. Kids get hooked on pizza during school lunch, which leads to additional consumption of unhealthy pizzas at leading chains. Many pizza parlors are located near poor neighborhoods and schools.
